Vintage Early 60s Herbert good Sondheim Bonwit Teller Black Velvet Little Black Dress Giant Bow XS/S

As LBDs go, this is one of the most special ones I have found, thanks to the sumptuous velvet and giant silk bow with fringe! This designer, Herbert Sondheim, was actually the father of composer Stephen Sondheim. He worked in New York City as a designer and traveled to Paris often to view the collections of the couture houses, which inspired his work. I will date this dress to the early 60s.

The dress is constructed of rich black velvet, fabric content unknown, fully lined with black acetate. Fitted bodice with squared off neckline and princess seams. Attached dark brown tulle underskirt adds a little volume to the skirt. There are two inverted pleats on the front of the skirt, which are concealed by the giant black silk ribbon bow, which is fixed to the left of center. Span of bow is approximately 12” across, with tails 5” tall. Really makes a statement! Dress zips up the back with a nylon zipper. I can't overstate how expensive this dress feels - the craftsmanship is top notch!

Condition: Excellent, possibly unworn. No issues to note!
