Description

Product Name: Large 1930s Glass Art-Deco Bottles – Green Ringed/Ribbed Kitchen Décor – Owens-Illinois Glass Double Finger Loop Handle good - Gallon/Half-Gallon

Gorgeous pair of large bright-green glass bottles or jugs—one-gallon and one-half gallon. Each bottle has a coordinating set of vertical or horizontal lines decorating the outside, and two round, finger-loop jug-handles that look like ears.

They will make an incredible addition to your bottle collection or your décor—whether it's 1930s/1940s art-deco/art moderne, modern prairie, modern farmhouse, or country. I looked through the patents for these and for similar bottles and found a fabulous collection of matching art-deco bottle designs by the same maker that would make a stunning display if collected.

MAKER:
Owens-Illinois Glass Company, Toledo, Ohio. If my research is correct, the number “3” to the left of the Owens-Illinois logo indicates that the bottles were made in the Fairmont, West Virginia plant.

CONDITION
The bottles are in very good to excellent vintage condition. Specifics about the condition of each bottle are included in the descriptions below. Both bottles have hard-water sediment deposits, which should come out by soaking in vinegar. (Most of the sediment was on the bottom until I stirred up the sediment by washing it and the inside dried with water spots.)

DATE/AGE: c.1937 and c.1938

HALF-GALLON BOTTLE:
Flask shaped (rectangular base). Removable black metal screw cap with minor amount of rust and dent in the top. One side of the bottle has several scuff marks, which are shown in the photos.

MEASUREMENTS: 9.75-inches tall, 8-inches wide

BOTTOM MARKS: Numbers “3” and “8” (no periods) with Owens-Illinois Glass logo between. Logo consists of a superimposed diamond and oval with the letter “I” inside. “Des Pat. 94413” followed by “7” and “W1007”

GALLON BOTTLE:
This bottle is very hard to find, especially in green. Cylinder shaped (round base) with rings around the body and a large blank placard/label area, no cap, and a heat-stress hairline good crack from manufacturing where one handle was attached to the bottle neck, which is not uncommon. It cannot be felt, inside or out and appears stable. It is shown in the photos.

MEASUREMENTS: 12-inches tall, 6-inches diameter

BOTTOM MARKS: Numbers “3” and “7” (no periods) with Owens-Illinois Glass logo between, followed by number “3.”

ABOUT THE AGE:
The logo itself dates from c.1929 to the mid-1950s and occasionally a little later. The patent was applied for in Nov 1934 and awarded in Jan 1935. The numbers “7” and “8” to the right of the logos are date codes and most likely indicate 1937 and 1938.

NOTES:
My best guess is that these were intended as soda fountain syrup bottles, but actually could have held almost anything, including homemade wine.
