Hard to find hardback originally published in 1882/3. This book without the copyright date and including a couple more biographies than the original was published in 1884. This 'how to' success book for young men is still relevant today for aspiring individuals. In fact it is still published today. It is broken down into 4 sections:
1. Success and Happiness - with headings like 'what to do', 'true respect', 'love of knowledge', 'ready men' and so on. Basically a good cookbook of ideas and thoughts some with true life references to interesting historical figures no less than Napoleon.
2. Thrift
3. Self Made Men - 10 stories of REAL 'self made' men who often started with virtually nothing and no connections. Men like Elias Howe,
Cornelius Vanderbilt, Jay Gould and James Garfield - definitely men of distinction, integrity, often self educated, intelligent and purposeful
and almost all from poor families
4. Rules for Behavior - etiquette, conversation, and other gentlemenly characteristics
Book includes 10 illustrations of the self-made men. Condition is good with perfectly clean pages and good boards - not even a page corner bend.
All pages attached to spine and relatively tight. Top edge of spine worn down and few other spine chips. What makes this extra inspiring is knowing the author was using first hand source info e.g. Lincoln's friend Thurlow Weed and James Garfield had just died the year of the book's publication by True & Co (1882). The etiquette section reminds one of George Washington's long list.
