Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla mollis) (mantell Fair in Welsh) is a member of the Rose family. The name Alchemilla, comes from the Arabic 'alkemelych', alchemist, bestowed by olden writers because of the wonder-working powers of the plant. Like many plants, it was associated with the Virgin Mary in the Middle Ages. (hence the name Lady's not Ladies Mantle). Lady's Mantle is mostly admired for its lovely foliage. Many believed that alchemical virtues lay in the subtle influence the rich accordion foliage imparted to the dewdrops that lay within its leaves and these dewdrops were used in many magical potions. Alchemilla was highly revered by alchemists, who went out early in the morning to collect the magical dew from the leaves. This magical dew was essential to the Alchemist's efforts to produce the Philosopher's Stone. Women also collected the dew in search of eternal beauty: it was believed that to moisten the skin with the dew from the Lady's Mantle would bring the glamour of the elves to a woman's beauty.

The 'dew' drops can also be used to cleanse the third eye to make it more acute to perceive visions and the magical dimension. Originally an herb of Freya, this herb is used in fertility magic and for protection. Lady's Mantle is also associated with Fairy lore - it is said that the Fairies too appreciate the sacred dew, which they collect and drink as a magical elixir. Lady's mantle is used in love spells, potions and amulets. Carry to attract love.....

Lady's Mantle is a woman's herb and is valuable for many female complaints. A powerful astringent, it can stop excessive menstruation or leucorrhoea. It is also helps regulate the female cycle. It strengthens the uterus and is believed to thus increase fertility. Its was also applied externally to female genitalia "to make them more virginal". Compresses were applied to ageing breasts to make them more firm. Most used for its ability to stop bleeding, which makes it an excellent wound herb that can be applied both, externally or internally. In Swedish traditional herbal medicine Lady's Mantle was given as a tincture in cases of spasmodic or convulsive disease and it was believed that if some of the herb was placed under the pillow at night it would promote a good night's sleep.

I gather most herbs good and flowers locally and dry them on the farm. Care is taken to ensure that the herbs and flowers are at their strongest and most powerful when they are gathered. None are collected from areas close to a road. They are placed in this lovely miniature glass flask and added to a real silver and very decorative chain so that you can carry them at all times.
