Kütahya was a very important ceramic center of the Ottomans, active from the 17th to the early 20th century with workshops making hand-painted ceramics for both domestic and public spheres. In Western Anatolia, not far to the stories Iznik ceramic center, Kütahya artisans were freer than their Iznik counterparts - who produced precisely designed ceramics for elite and palace residences, urban, and high imperial religious buildings - to bring their artistry and unique ideas to the fore. Iznik went into decline at the end of the 17th century; Kütahya ascended and outlasted Iznik, continuing as the prominent ceramic production center for the next three centuries.
